The year is 1986 and a short film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and executive produced by George Lucas sets out to capture the hearts of mankind with a musical sci-fi with the infamous Michael Jackson. The movie was exclusive to visitors to the Disney parks and was called “Captain EO”

In February 1993 I embarked on an adventure and visited Disney World. My time there was truly magical especially when I got to see the attraction at Epcot. The exhibit to view Caption EO was also in 3D bringing a whole new dimension to the idea of “light”.

EO was traveling the universe bringing freedom to the inhabitants. He was using his power to transform the darkness that resides within into light to share with others. He conveyed we are beautiful from within and he was bringing a key to unlock it that was his gift to all. Not only could we see his gift but hear it. EO was here to bring brighter days!

His musical number “We are here to change the world” spoke of the peace and paradise we can create. Not pointing our fingers, but lending a hand to truly live as we should. The passing of Michael Jackson this past week has brought back in me the awareness of how one can express ones self, in a way that we truly believe, from within.

Recently, I was procured to assist a speaker with helping create visual support for a recent lecture they had given. The spokesperson wished to transform their recorded MP3 audio with pictures as a video end product. To help others stimulate their interest with the added benefit of listening and watching. At the end of the narrative we added some graphic text to convey the subject matter into a capsule aided in the background with Baroque Music.

As we listen to the world around us many are drawn to their own conclusions. Sight and sound, smells and feelings conjure up pictures in each, unique in their own way. One can pick up on hearing something and with their “minds-eye” see a vast array of possibilities. A sound one time might make one think “what was that” and another time “I think I know what it was”. The beauty of seeing things differently each and every time conjures up the awareness that we are unique in every way.

Our mind loves to use our heart, in harmony to help us see. Songs we hear become songs we play from a place somewhere within. What a wonderful way to express ones self by making sights out of sound. And, then maybe a future will be held together with a vision that is because of sound sight.

Following a beat that is close to our heart

Yesterday afternoon I listened in on member services calls to individuals who had called into our “800″ number. This is a valuable department in our society because one can speak directly to a fellow colleague. I am grateful to have experienced this process in the training program to better prepare myself to assist others.

It reminded me of when I was playing in the symphony. The musical score was laid out there in front of me and I could play the notes. In order to hear the piece as intended; we needed a conductor to coordinate the rhythm. Every director interrupts the timing differently. What is important is that we are all on the same page playing together even though we have a different note.

On one particular call the person on the other end of the line was full of vibrancy and spirit flowing from their voice. It was quite evident that they too felt the “chord” running through our veins of the excitement of life yet to be experienced. Tears of joy flooded my soul in anticipation in every word they spoke.

I saw from this day that from deep down inside many like myself are feeling this “song”; one of true happiness, one of great appreciation and most of all following a beat that is close to our heart.

One Step in Human Progress

I recall winding up my Big Ben clock at night before I went to sleep and then be abruptly awakened the next morning with that clanging bell. To be jolted out of a restful sleep, jumping at the clamor always sent shock waves through my body.

Today, I am much grateful for the onset of clock radios that I can gradually be lifted out of a deep sleep with the sound of music. Some years ago when my public radio station used to sign on for the day, they would play the sounds of daybreak, with birds and wind making a graceful dawning of a new day.

I can see more clearly now that our society can truly appreciate the finer things in life without having to experience, like some have, a near death experience. How thankful I am that this group showed me how that, right now, is the time to live and love it. Now, when I wake up in the morning I hear that song and listen to what it is offering me. “Oh what a beautiful morning…”.

There came a time when the musical was said to be over and movie makers would no longer produce them. Then just a few years ago they came back bigger and better than ever. One can now say that a movement, one step in human progress, has been brought on by hearing and sharing the music playing from within.

I hear the words “She’ll be coming ‘round the mountain, when she comes…” as an example that we are creating something wonderful coming; “…a lovely day” the chorus of a pop song; and not to be forgotten “…don’t worry, be happy!”

We only need to look as far as standing in front of the mirror, after we have just completed singing sweetly in the shower. Surrounding ones self with positive dispositions will cause a harmony with the melody we are hearing. Then one can enjoy the symphony with others which culminates into a Grammy like reward.

Can our deepest desires be brought to fruition? May we wake up one day and find all the answers to our questions? Could it be as simple as listening to Mozart?

It must be that time of day; the music teacher is preparing to play some music. Each one of us is to physically express ourselves as the music deems fit. Some sway to and fro, another steps in place, still others run about enjoying each and every moment. And one has sat down with their tablet to draw themselves a picture. What common denominator could possibly be the motivation that could inspire us as individuals?

Wikipedia defines music as an art form whose medium is sound organized in time. Music and all of its facets-physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual-help to improve or maintain health. It is also used to: improve learning, build self-esteem, reduce stress, and support physical exercise. Music can increase the production of vital brain chemicals related to our longevity, well-being and quality of life.

Audio technology has vastly grown in the past several years. The research and development of tonal sequences is astounding. Today with better listening devices one can easily take advantage of sound therapies which target specific ailments.

How exciting and marvelous to think that whatever ails you could come right down to selecting the right type of music, sitting back, and letting nature take its course. Or is it using nature to change our course?

As a young teenager growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the 1960’s; I felt part of a very progressive community. Because of the University of Michigan, I was privileged at an early age to have that era’s brightest teachers. It prepared me for an optimistic view for our future.

I became proud of my father when he helped drive a car load from my seventh grade class to Detroit, Michigan. We went to the Fisher Theatre to see the premiere of an artful music driven“2001 A Space Odyssey”. We had read the book in class and, now we would see this awe inspiring movie.

Years later the sequel came out, “2010” and one line in the movie summed up what I grew up to believe. “Something wonderful is happening” spoke louder than what every one and current events were saying. I knew deep in my heart that WE controlled our destiny and I wanted to play a part in it.

Now, it stands to reason why I am motivated to belong to an organization that truly strives to assist individuals to become the person they were meant to be. In meeting others that want a brighter future and realize they have the power to create it.

We only need to look to the horizon and witness the beautiful sun set on a civilization that has been “hell-bent” on destruction. Then, turn around and marvel at the “sun-rise” of a new world with honest hope.
